iClever Desktop USB charger with cables plugged in

USB Charger iClever 50W 6-Port Desktop Wall Charger Review

Last time I went away for a couple of nights I spent a little time to count what I was taking with me. Want to take a guess how many wall chargers I had? I need to be able to charge my android tablet, phone, external battery, mifi, bluetooth keyboard, kindle, wifi NAS and windows tablet all run from something charged via a USB port. In total I realized I was carrying 5 USB wall chargers and while I might have been able to get this down slightly I still needed most of them.

Having a single standard for charging and data in USB has been a huge positive to the market and rather than carry individually shaped and different wattage chargers plug in to anything and you’ll get a response.  This does leave the problem with how many of them you have to have.

The iClever 50W 6-Port Desktop wall charger aims to fix this problem. In simplest terms its a wall USB charger that has 6 sockets. Plug in up to six things at once and charge them all at the same time.

iClever market it as both a solution for the desktop and on the go and I’ve had it on my desk and in my bag for the last couple of weeks and while there are some downsides it’s a huge improvement over carrying many wall chargers.

The unit is about 10cm long, just over 7cm high and about 2.5cm deep. One end has a row of tightly packed USB ports and the opposite end has a single 8 in power cable socket. The ends of the charger are gloss plastic and the main body is covered with rubberized plastic to give a little grip. The charger comes with a removable 1.5m cable.

To use plug into the wall and plug in USB cables to charge your devices. It is specced at a total of 10 amps at five volts with a maximum of 2.4 Amps per port. To put that in real terms that’s enough to fill all the ports  with high draw devices and still get a good charge from it.

The Ergohacks Evaluation

iClever have built into the charger as much versatility as possible. The input cable is removable which means it could be substituted for a cable with a different plug if you’re travelling internationally and it can handle between 110V and 220V so will work in Europe and the US with no problems.

The charger has a technology built into it which iClever calls SmartID. This is claimed to identify specific devices and deliberately put out the most charge that a device can handle. In other words it should speed up charging. It’s difficult to quantify how well this works but I did notice things charging faster with the iClever than a standard ‘non-smart’ generic charger.

Ergonomic Design

The charger feels solid and I was surprised to find that it does not easily tip over. I did have issues with having six cables plugged in at once but solved this by getting a number of very short cables that I could leave plugged into it on my desk and which were easier to pack when travelling.

Environment & People

Wall wart chargers take a small amount of electricity even when they’re not being used and having six compressed down to one point which can be easily turned on and off uses less standby power.

The charger is available on Amazon for £15 which falls in to the middle of the market for similar products. This charger does have a higher wattage output which means you can charge more larger devices at once quicker.

Lets cut to the chase. Look around your room. How many devices do you have that charge via USB? How many wall chargers are plugged in?  If you have more than a couple of each you should very much consider amalgamating them into a single unit. The iClever 50W 6-Port Desktop Wall Charger is well designed and compact and crucially puts out a good amperage on every port for fast charging.
