The Travelrest travel pillow is a tubular inflatable pillow that fits snugly against your neck and body. It can be tied to the seat to keep it in place or slipped around the waist messenger bag style. The pillow itself is extremely compact and comfortable with a similar texture to standard inflatable pillows and camping mattresses, but when combined with its velour cover that has memory foam inserts, it becomes the pillow that dreams are made of.
It is made from flocked PVC vinyl, which isn’t an eco-friendly fabric at all, but I have yet to find an ergonomic, eco-friendly alternative for a lightweight, inflatable travel pillow made out of plastic. It is one of the more durable travel pillows and a perfect candidate for future mending rather than replacing.

About HiGear Design, Inc.
Travelrest is a HiGear Design, Inc. brand. The company was founded in 2007 and is based in Mill Valley, California. They make a small selection of innovative travel accessories. The travelrest pillow was their first design – “Our founder invented his first travel accessory out of necessity when he tied his airline pillow to his seat using his shoelaces.” *
The travelrest travel pillow fits across or to the side of your body when seated and supports your head and neck in a relaxed and comfortable position. It can be tied around a seat or worn across body like a messenger bag and both are very comfortable.
The valve has been upgraded since the first model and is now a larger, black seal with an internal one-way valve. The pillow is easily inflated with 2-3 blows and to reach the perfect custom setting, lightly press on the internal valve to let out some air. It is a very clever mechanism and although the valve is a little tight, it does have a lip to hold on to and both inflating and deflating to the desired firmness is easy to do.
We tested during journeys by car in both front and back seats, as well as with an integrated car seat and booster cushion and it was very comfortable and ergonomic in variable settings. It does not work with a car seat that has an integrated headrest or posture pads (common in special needs car seats), but worked well with a standard car seat or booster seat.
It is excellent for chronic pain, fatigue and motion sickness sufferers as I can attest from personal experience.
- Optimized for travel, longer journeys in particular
- Target age range: Children, Adults, Older adults (Due to potential choking hazard, not recommended for babies or toddlers)
- Target gender: Unisex/gender neutral
- Optimized for left or right side use
The Travelrest travel pillow is not the cheapest travel pillow, but it is one of the most cost-effective options on the market. For those who travel with difficulty due to pain or travel sickness, who struggle to sleep on flights or long journeys or who travel with young children, the cost isn’t the price tag for a travel accessory, but for a smoother long haul experience.
Many rave reviews have been written over this pillow and after trying it on car journeys for two weeks, this is another. £20 – £35 is a small price to pay for a smoother journey. It is a well-made inflatable pillow, more comfortable than I ever would have guessed an inflatable pillow could be. It also rolls up and wraps around the handle of a carry-on, ready for the flight and/or the taxi ride from the airport.

The Travelrest travel pillow ticks all the boxes. It is lightweight, rolls up to attach to the handle of a carry-on bag and unrolls to provide comfortable, ergonomic neck support after inflation with less than a handful of breaths. I found it easy to inflate, use, deflate and keep clean, although the cover took a little work to slip on well.
It works equally well for children and adults, in the front seat or back and I am highly optimistic that it will work fantastic on a long flight as well – we haven’t test it on a plane yet, but plan to soon.
The cover isn’t necessary, but it does provide additional comfort and support. If you can afford to go all in, do so. Highly recommended.
