Puretrak Talent Mouse Mat Review

Mousemats are not naturally something that people often get excited over but this January when I was looking to build a new VR ready PC going down my list of peripherals I realized that the rather old mousemat I was using just wasn’t going to be up to snuff.  Enter the PureTrak Talent Gaming Mousemat.

The Talent is a huge – 19 x 14 inch or 48 x 35.5 cm and turned out to be much thicker than I expected at almost a cm deep. It’s a traditional style rubber backed and cloth top mat and the cloth has been treated so it’s a much lower friction than you expect. I’ve used a variety of mats over the years and this is the lowest friction cloth mat I’ve ever used on par with some of the metal mousemats but without their other issues.

Product Information

About PureTrak Precision Gaming Gear

PureTrak is an American gaming peripheral company that makes mouse pads, mouse skates (feet) and one model of mouse. They’ve been around 10 years and for a small company have a commendable environmental policy “packaging, and printed items are made using no less than recycled 70% post-consumer material through responsible paper choices, Soy-Based inks, Eco-Friendly toners, and contain easily recyclable plastics. In addition, every single PureTrak product is manufactured to be 100% fully recyclable. ”

The Talent looks like a traditional mouse mat – just much larger than you’ll find on most desks. It has a honeycomb pattern with the combs a lighter shade of grey and a logo in the bottom right. Touch it and you can see why you want it – it’s very, smooth and makes a noticeable difference in how well your mouse moves.

  • Target gender: Unisex
  • Ambidextrous
  • Target audience: Dedicated PC gamers but also those who want more mousing space
  • Machine washable – I’d recommend cleaning with a damp cloth in most circumstances unless it a really need deeper wash
  • Stain resistant

At £12.50 the Talent compares very favorably with similarly sized mouse mats available on Amazon from a number of manufacturers. The Talent is however somewhat thicker than most in its niche which does let it compete against the few more expensive competitors.

Product dimensions: 48 x 35.5 x 1 cm
Item Weight: 600g (approx)
Colour: Black or white
Materials: Cloth top with rubber base
Made in the USA

PureTrak say that the extra thickness of the Talent means it can even out a surface that’s not completely smooth and this does seem to be true. I tried putting several coins underneath it and when turned back over I wasn’t able to locate them by touch. The Talent will work best with a higher end mouse but will still have some benefit with lower resolution and spec input devices.

Talent Angle

PC gamers and heavy users are always looking for simple ways to improve their game and get more productivity out of their system and the mouse mat is very easy to overlook. The PureTrak Talent is a very economic purchase when compared to other PC components but offers a significantly better mousing experience and better ergonomics.

If you’ve the desk space to handle it you should be looking at upgrading your mouse mat and the Talent would be a very sensible choice. Recommended for PC gamers and power users.
