“The Star vanished from the center of the telescopes image in less time than a human heartbeat. There was no mistake. Dudley Bose was looking right at it when it happened. He blinked in surprise drawing back from the eyepiece. “That’s not right” He muttered. He shivered slightly in reaction to the cold air around him flapping gloved hands against his arms.”
We all have our favorite book that we re-read and relisten to regularly. When I first got an Audible audio book subscription the first credit I spent was on Peter F. Hamilton’s Pandora’s Star and the second on the sequel Judas Unchained.
The books are set nearly 400 years in the future and humans have spread to over 400 worlds linked by wormholes. An astronomer on an outer world notices a star 2000 light years distant and then another a little closer vanish in a second and the question of who and how is posted to a civilization that can just – just – go and see.

Hamilton has a reputation of writing sprawling, multiple plot lined books that require many hours to get through and the Confederation universe created in Pandora’s star is his greatest achievement. The audiobook is uncut and very well narrated with a stern English accent adding to its gravitas.
If you are going to read or listen to one book this year then Pandora’s Star would be a wonderful choice and then you will pick up Judas Unchained the moment it’s finished. Guaranteed.
