Everyone knows that children (and adults) should have a well rounded and nutritious diet with a full range of vitamins, minerals and other good things. Everyone also knows that children can be picky eaters, may not get enough sunlight exposure for adequate Vitamin D levels or due to certain digestive issues may not be absorbing all the good stuff from their food. Organic food is not fortified with vitamins and minerals either.
The answer is obvious – eat a healthy, varied diet or add some supplements. The Department of Health recommends that children under five take at least a Vitamin A, C and D supplement and pediatricians often recommend an all round supplement for children with some chronic health issues. All children do not need supplements, but for those who do, the problem comes in the choosing: which supplement is best?
The ideal choice will have all of the correct ingredients without unnecessary, unhealthy or allergenic fillers or binders. You want something that is as environmentally safe as possible, something that is not too large to chew or swallow and if it’s designed for children, a nice a taste without adding too much extra sugar is a bonus. Oh yes – it should also be easily available and not too expensive.
We have been through a number of brands and types. One of our favorites is Solgar’s Kangavites Multivitamin and Mineral Chewable Tablets.
Price: £8.50 – £15.84
Solgar is a trusted name which anyone who has taken multivitamins probably recognizes. They started in 1947 with the slogan “Live Vibrantly” and have built up a reputation of well proportioned products with hypoallergenic fillers.
The Kangavites range is designed specifically for children from age three upwards and are all chewable. If the child is three to six they take one and six and above get two. There are three flavors – Bouncing Berry, Tropical Punch, and Orange Burst and the packs are either 90 or 120 tablets large.
So what is and isn’t in them? First to note – they are vegan, salt, yeast, soy, gluten and dairy free and have no artificial flavors, colours or preservatives. Solgar publishes a complete list of the ingredients here but the short version is everything that you could possible need. Some are little less than the RDA but most are in the 100% to 150% quantity.
Environment & People
When you exclude no-brand supplements that are hard to get decent information on Kangavites fall well within the price you’d expect to pay. The supplements work at around £12 for 120 – around 10p a day for three to six year olds or 20p a day for those older. From the other perspective you’d be very hard pushed to get that level of nutrition from a normal diet for a similar cost.
The whole field of supplements have their critics and while its true that a perfect diet would be better in the real world that its difficult to guarantee. If you’re going to supplement you’re doing it to make sure your child has the best possible nutrients and in that case Solgar Kangavites are a solid choice – a good taste, chewable rather than needing swallowing and packed with everything you need. Highly recommended.
