I stumbled across the Frontlines series whilst looking for a decent military science fiction series that I hadn’t read before. It looked promising and once I started reading, I didn’t stop until I ran out of books. The series follows a soldier through a war and the opening pages describe the following:

The year is 2108, and the North American Commonwealth is bursting at the seams. For welfare rats like Andrew Grayson, there are only two ways out of the crime-ridden and filthy welfare tenements, where you’re restricted to two thousand calories of badly flavored soy every day:

You can hope to win the lottery and draw a ticket on a colony ship settling off-world, or you can join the service.

Frontlines has a strong primary protagonist and the story unfolds through his perspective, it is even written in first person. It has great combat and tactical scenes, both shipboard and planetside and it is set in a future earth that I had no trouble buying into. It is filled with strong ideas about government, power, the military, survival and individual choice.

Frontlines is a character driven series that rests of a thread of suspense that is constantly unravelling. It is written in a fluent style from a single viewpoint, which makes it an excellent series to pack as holiday reading. It is not a half-an-hour-before-bed kind of story unless you want to find yourself still reading it when the sun comes up.

Descriptive language is sparse, it is an action packed series well-structured around a foot soldier in a massive, sprawling war and it often made me feel the frustration and helplessness that is inevitable when you are just a small cog in a great machine. Marko Kloos is a great story teller and Frontlines is a solidly written military sci-fi series. Recommended.
