The Foldi is a beautifully designed portable LED lamp made by the Daylight Company. It has 30 LED bulbs on an adjustable arm that folds up for traveling. Made for hobbyists who sew, stitch, glue and match colour hues closely, it is an excellent light source that shines directly on a work space. It is also recommended by occupational therapists for studying, reading and with computer use.
I have been using the Foldi for the last few weeks and not only does it look great on my desk, it provides a large amount of light on the work surface and ambient light around the room. I do have photophobia and experience migraine attacks that increase my sensitivity to bright light, but I found that opening it only an inch or two and placing it behind my monitor worked well for me. I reduced the eye strain of a bright monitor with the light behind and around it without increasing the light in the room to an uncomfortable level. The thirty LED’s were much too bright during a migraine attack, but it was comfortable on migraine-free and light migraine days.
It is a well-designed product with only one design choice that I did not like. The Foldi can only be turned off by folding it and although the lamp can be folded without folding away the base stand, it is almost impossible to open it again from that position. In order to turn off the light, both the lamp arm and the stand had to be folded away. Although my Foldi did plenty of traveling about, I also used it as a lamp on my desk or bedside table and would have really appreciated either a button or an altered design that allowed me to just flip the lamp arm shut whilst it remained upright on its foot stand. I can forgive this annoyance because I have space on my desk to put it down flat and one of its best features for me is its portability. My laptop and I travel around the house and when traveling further afield, there is never a light that I can use comfortably, but with the Foldi, I can easily pack my own.
The 30 LED lights are full-spectrum white light 4 watts bulbs. The colour temperature is 6500 Kelvin, the colour rendering index is 85 and the average lifespan is 20 000 hours. There is a cool light option with a colour temperature of 4000 Kelvin that is more appropriate for anyone who cannot tolerate white light.
There is no dimmer option, it is as bright as it is. It is excellent quality light on a small surface area and also provide ambient room lighting, however it is quite bright for anyone sensitive to light who are looking for a very low light.
The Foldi is small, lightweight and portable. I used it in my home office during the day and in my bedroom as a bedside lamp in the evening and both uses were fantastic. My four-year old loved borrowing it for her desk to do some drawing, painting, beading, sewing and crafts. It worked itself around the house – into the living room for light when gaming, into the dining as a light to plop in the middle of the table, into my husband’s office to live on his desk until it was stolen back by my daughter to use it as a torch when climbing into her dark cave areas throughout the house. I also pack it when traveling to use both as a mobile office/desk lamp and bedside lamp. It folds down completely and slips into a sleeve provided with the product for travel.
USB or battery operated
It runs for up to 8 hours on batteries and comes with rechargeable batteries included and plugs into my laptop at the desk with a USB cable. The USB cable does not charge the batteries. There is mains operated version available as well.
The LED light bulbs are mercury free, energy-efficient and durable with up to 20 000 hours of use, that’s more than 2 years if used for 8 hours on weekdays. The bulbs are not replaceable, once they reach the end of their lifespan, the lamp has to be fully replaced.

The Foldi is highly accessible for anyone with a visual impairment. It is recommended for users with low vision in particular. The light is bright, those with photophobia (light sensitivity) may struggle with it, but I would still recommend it. I have photophobia and experience migraine attacks that increase my sensitivity to bright light, but I found that opening it only an inch or two and placing it behind my monitor worked well for me. It reduced the eye strain of a bright monitor with the light behind and around it without increasing the light in the room to an uncomfortable level. The thirty LED’s were much too bright during a migraine attack, but it was comfortable on migraine-free and light migraine days. There is no flash or flicker.
The Foldi has no sound and makes no noise. It is highly accessible to anyone with a hearing impairment, including deaf users as well as anyone with hyperacusis (sound sensitivity) or tinnitus.
Input and touch
The Foldi does not require any strength or endurance to open and close, but it does require some precision. In the folded position, there is a small thumb indent to lift the light arm and then, whilst holding the lamp, there is a indent and ridge to open up the stand.
It is not impossible, but difficult to open with one hand or with limited use or dexterity. It is not possible to use the palm of your hand, the slots are just large enough for a single finger. I struggled to open it. Closing is much easier as both the arms just collapse inwards with a gentle push.
I would not recommend it to anyone with significant hand issues, a tremor or who cannot use individual fingers with some reliability.
Movement and mobility
The Foldi is small and lightweight and easy to carry around. For those requiring their hands free when moving or use a mobility aid like crutches, it slots into even a small bag easily and doesn’t have to be carried in your hands.
Motion sickness and balance disorders
There are no motion sickness triggers.
Ease of Use
The Foldi is easy to set-up, use and maintain. It flips open to turn on, flips shut to turn off, its USB cable plugs into any device with a USB port and the batteries are straightforward to fit and replace. It does not collect much dust and is easy to keep clean. There is no language or math requirement in set-up, use or maintenance.
The Foldi is made out of plastic. It is easy to keep clean and dust free, a bonus point for anyone with asthma and a dust mite allergy. It does emit white light, but there is a cool light option that reduces the light emitted from 6500 Kelvin to 4000 Kelvin for anyone who cannot tolerate bright light.

“In 1990, Patrick Jacquelin discovered the daylight bulb on a trip abroad. Recognizing that natural daylight is the healthiest and more comfortable light for our eyes, he realised that this ‘daylight simulation effect’ could benefit thousands of individuals who need natural light for everyday tasks, or more specifically, for hobbies that involved intricate detail and colour matching. From this The daylight Company was created.” Read more…

The Foldi is a stylish, compact and well-designed lamp that provides plenty of light in a comfortable position. It is a durable product, accessible to many and works well on a desk, bedside table or coffee table. It’s only flaw is that it can be hard to open and it cannot be left in an upright position unless it is turned on.
I have grown quite attached to it and it has definitely made it onto my list of must-pack-products when traveling both for work and leisure. Highly recommended to anyone with good manual dexterity looking for good lighting on a work surface or ambient lighting around a room.
