Fieldrunners 2 is a classic tower defense game that was released July 2012, five years ago. I am a huge fan of tower defense games, played Fieldrunners and it was only natural to immediately play Fieldrunners 2. Fieldrunners was one of the first decent tower defense games to hit the App Store and Fieldrunners 2 neatly picked up the challenge of excelling within the genre. Tower Defense games are like Marmite, you either love them, hate them or aren’t sure you want to try them.
If you love them, this one is a gem, but you’ve probably already played it. If you hate them, you’re probably never going to read this. If you’ve never played a tower defense game, this is a great place to start. I didn’t like the idea of behind the genre, slaughtering aliens/invaders/monsters/bugs in the thousands seemed really unappealing, but tower defense games are strategy games at heart. The violence is almost always superfluous and superficial in a way that disconnects it from anything resembling reality. The strategy component on the other hand, is the fun part and it’s the part that doesn’t translate. You have to play it to understand it. Play this and see if you’ll be back for just another level as well.
The Ergohacks Verdict
I don’t often replay games, except excellent strategy games. It’s been five years and I still play Fieldrunners 2 HD on the iPad. There are still some levels I haven’t mastered, some strategies I haven’t tried and although it’s a goofy game, it has all the rare qualities that all tower defense games should have – it makes logical sense. Analyse the map, perfect your strategy, get your timing just right and it all comes together beautifully.
