Defence Grid has been a stalwart and some will say the best tower defence game available for several years and we were all excited when we heard in 2012 that Hidden Path would be kickstarting Defense Grid 2. Fast forward a couple of years and the successful kickstarter and extra investment funding has finally come to fruition.
The game launching today will look familiar to any Defence Grid 1 player with the typical towers, angle of view, alien attackers and sarcastic computer commentator but there is more here than in the original.
Graphics look significantly more polished and perhaps more importantly there are new towers, a single player campaign and online PVP and co-op.
Finally there is a new level creation toolkit called DG Architect that lets you design your own maps which can then be shared via the Steam Workshop. This looks to be quite a technical utility but the prospect of being able to develop our own maps and access a community of more levels is very appealing.
This all looks very interesting and promising but we’ll have to wait and see if the magic of Defence Grid turns out to be in its sequel.
Defence Grid 2 will be available today for the PS4, Xbox One, PC, Mac and on Linux. It will cost £18.99 on Steam and a similar price on the consoles.
