Anker astro 2

The Anker Astro Mini 3000mAh external battery is a tiny usb external battery pack the shape and size of a stick of lipstick. It’s 3000mAh capacity is sufficient for a full charge on most phones and a part charge on a tablet.

The battery pack contains a small 3000mAh / 3.7 Volt capacity battery and can output DC at 1A and input at .8A. This means it can charge most smart phones at a high speed and will just be able to trickle charge most tablets.  It charges from a USB socket (computer or wall) to the micro-USB on the battery – this means it charges with the same cable you use to charge your device.  It will hold the charge unused for 3 to 4 months and then slowly lose charge over a period of years.

In addition the Astro cannot step down its output to less than 30mA meaning that some bluetooth headsets cannot be charged with this.

The battery comes with a standard USB to micro-USB cable, making it appropriate for most smart phones including Android phones and Windows Phone. It will not work with the included cable with any Apple products, but you can use your standard charging cable or purchase an extra to carry with you.

Visually the battery is a small brushed metal cylinder with what looks like a cap on one end. It has a USB, micro-USB and a small button/LED on that end and is otherwise featureless. It is available in four colors, black, silver, light blue and pink which are all priced the same.

The LED will flash green when the Astro is charging another device and will be a constant red when it is being charged. It switches off when the external device or the Astro itself are fully charged. As there is the difference between the constant and flash the choice of red and green is not significant for the color blind.

There is no audio component to the Astro, nor any needed.

The Astro feels good in the hand and the brushed metal surface is not slippy, making it more difficult to drop.  It is lighter than you expect it to be at only 75 grams.

The Astro requires you to press the button to start charging your phone which is small, but requires little pressure. The most difficult part of the process is plugging in the USB cable.

Ease of Use

The Astro is straightforward to use with the most difficult part of the process being the plugging in of the micro-USB.  The use of the button and LED is simple to understand and difficult to get wrong and it switches itself automatically when a full phone charge is reached.

Anker astro 2

The Anker Astro Mini 3000mAh battery is exactly what is purports to be. A very small, simple compact battery with enough charge onboard to charge your phone once. In practice it works well and is recommended as an emergency or extra long day extra with its small size lending itself well to being added to your bag and forgotten about until it is needed.

The review is based on the black version.
